1867 1957 TIMELINE 1876 Enrolls at the Royal School of Music in Parma. Plays the cello in a number of school recitals and for five seasons of the Teatro Regio. 1885 Earns a diploma in cello and composition with highest honors. 1886 Engaged as the principal cellist of the Italian opera company headed by the impresario Claudio Rossi, on tour at the Teatro Imperial of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. At the last moment, he is called upon to replace the ensemble’s regular conductor. The first opera he conducts is Verdi’s Aida . During this period he also conducts several world premieres, including: Edmea by Alfredo Catalani on November 4, 1886, at the Teatro Carignano in Turin; Pagliacci by Ruggero Leoncavallo on May 21, 1892, at the Teatro Dal Verme in Milan. 1895 On December 22 he makes his conducting debut as artistic director of the Teatro Regio in Turin, where, on February 1, 1896 he will conduct the world premiere of La bohème by Giacomo Puccini. 1867 Born in Parma on March 25, the first of the four children of Claudio Toscanini and Paola Montani.
