Infrastructures: a Key for Growth
The companies that made up the backbone of the Group in the early twentieth century began to work mostly in Italy, after which they gradually spread to Europe and Africa. The Group’s expansion to other continents took place at the same time as its acquisition of increasingly specialized skills in major infrastructural works. Dams, roads, ports and airports that have accompanied the phases of growth of the American continent and the process of independence in African and Asian countries.
- Italy: more than 700 projects aimed at supporting Italy’s process of unification, and the development processes that came after, depending on the needs of the times: new rail networks and roads systems, the building of tunnels to connect the country to Europe, and new urban mobility system to fight urban pollution.
- Europe: city, mobility and quality of life have been the leitmotifs for more than 1,000 projects built totally in Europe and aimed at supporting easy mobility and sustainable urbanization, thanks to metro and high-speed railway system in the major European cities.
- Africa: more than 400 works in Africa have mainly focused on water for life and development, with dams and hydroelectric projects, contributing to the development of entire countries, some of which implementing the biggest dams in Africa, to provide people and industries with electricity.
- North America: the challenge of the technological frontier has been the common denominator for more than 200 projects carried out in North America. In the region the Group built projects in major cities, and complex underground works, adopting innovative technical solutions in the tunneling sector to better manage water, to stave off the consequences of drought, and to prevent rivers from being contaminated during floods caused by heavy rainfall.
- South America: more than 200 works mainly focus on development and international trade, which are not just the amazing expansion of the Panama Canal, but also the main roads and highways connecting the major cities and projects linking countries like the dual-nation hydroelectric project of Yacyretà (Argentina and Paraguay).
- Asia and Oceania: approximately 70 large-scale infrastructural works in Asia and Oceania accompanying the awakening of the Pacific giants.
- Middle East and North Africa: more than 50 projects – from religious and public buildings to modern underground metro system, from water management projects to the Abu Simbel Rescue, executed at the request of UNESCO – all carried out in extreme environmental circumstances.
